Linux Engineer – NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA)

Mons, Belgium (SHAPE) | Full-time On-site | Contract

IMPORTANT: NATO SECRET SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED (Mandatory to apply)

We are seeking a skilled Linux Engineer to support one of NATO's largest and most advanced Cyber Defence capabilities. This role is part of a highly international environment supporting critical cybersecurity services across 32 NATO member countries and 100+ sites worldwide.

Role Overview

As a Linux Engineer, you will be responsible for the administration, maintenance, and secure operation of Linux-based infrastructure supporting NATO cyber defence services. You will work closely with DevOps, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure systems are secure, stable, and highly available.

What You'll Be Doing

• Administer, configure, and maintain Linux servers (primarily RHEL)
• Support installation, upgrades, and lifecycle management of Linux systems
• Develop and maintain automation scripts using Python and Ansible
• Implement and enforce security controls (firewalls, encryption, access control)
• Support virtualization environments (e.g., VMware)
• Collaborate within DevOps-oriented infrastructure teams
• Troubleshoot system, application, and infrastructure issues
• Ensure systems align with cybersecurity best practices
• Support continuous improvement and automation initiatives

Required Expertise & Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years experience in Linux server administration (RHEL preferred)
• Strong scripting skills (Python required)
• At least 1 year experience with Ansible
• Experience with VMware or similar virtualization platforms
• Solid understanding of Linux security best practices
• Experience with Linux/Unix systems in enterprise environments
• Ability to work in complex, large-scale infrastructures
• Linux/Unix-related certifications (active or previously held)

Desirable Skills

• Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or equivalent
• Experience with Red Hat Satellite
• Exposure to DevOps methodologies and tools
• Strong understanding of system architecture layers (App, Container, Network, Infrastructure)
• Experience in large international or defence environments
• Strong motivation for continuous learning in Linux ecosystems

Location & Working Conditions

• On-site position in Mons (SHAPE), Belgium
• Standard office working hours
• Occasional out-of-hours support for maintenance activities
• Rare travel (approx. 2 times per year to Braine-l'Alleud or Brussels)

Security Requirement

Valid NATO SECRET security clearance is mandatory for this position
