Job Purpose

The Protein Biochemistry group has a mission to design and generate vaccine candidates by understanding their relation to disease using state-of-the-art technology and talent, ensuring delivery of best-in-class vaccines to the patients.

Your role

The Expert Scientist in the Protein Biochemistry group is expected to lead, design, and execute scientific studies in support of vaccine projects or technological platforms in discovery, development, or life cycle management. More specifically, he will be the reference in the team for early vaccine candidate production using prokaryotic/eukaryotic expression systems, molecular virology technologies, or molecular bacteriology technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads the development and implementation of innovative expression system technologies for recombinant proteins and ensures alignment and state of the art for a given technology across the department.
  • Responsible for the conception, design, implementation, and interpretation of scientific research experiments in support of vaccine development.
  • Performs data management and draws conclusions from experimental data. Based on data interpretation suggests next steps to meet project objectives.
  • Supervises and leads a team of scientist(s) and/or technician(s) ensuring clear and effective communication, task allocation, and performance monitoring.
  • Active participation and presentation of lab results in internal meetings, working groups, and technical and project team meetings, ensuring quality interpretation and extensive quality check of raw data.
  • Ensures highest ethical standards, good scientific practices & data integrity are implemented in daily scientific activities.
  • Ensures timely data collection & reporting (including participation in internal/external scientific documents) in area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the key research activities and basic regulations.
  • Takes appropriate actions to resolve issues in area of responsibility affecting research strategy and progress.
  • Can advise Discovery project and Vaccine development leaders on scientific issues related to their projects, notably through participation at project team or technical team meetings.
  • Can supervise collaborative research studies with third parties but also PhD students or postdoc.
  • Can be the principal author of publications submitted to peer review journals.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • PhD in Life Sciences with +3 years of postdoctoral experience, or Master’s degree with 6+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • In-depth understanding and hands-on experience using state-of-the-art expression system technologies (eukaryotic and prokaryotic).
  • Wide expertise in protein science and molecular biology.
  • Familiarity and/or previous exposure to high throughput and/or large-scale protein production and purification workflows in a pharmaceutical/Biotech environment.
  • Additional experience in mRNA-based vaccine and/or cell engineering is an asset.
  • Understand & implement processes/procedures/policies specific to the vaccine R&D and to GSK with minimal bureaucracy and a focus on efficiency and quality.
  • Fluent in English, oral and writing. Proficiency in French would be highly advantageous.
  • Good communication skills, oral and writing.
  • Ability to present scientific data in front of a large audience.
  • Good project scientific/technical strategy skills.

  • Experience in managing scientific team(s).
